Hedgehogs are fascinating creatures that play an important role in our local ecosystems. Unfortunately, their numbers have declined in recent years due to habitat loss, road accidents, and other threats. Here in Holybrook Parish, we can all do our part to help them thrive!
Be a Hedgehog Hero:
Food: Hedgehogs are insectivores, but they'll appreciate a helping hand. Offer meat-based kitten biscuits in shallow dishes and keep a water source available. Milk is harmful, so stick to water!
Habitat: Provide safe spaces for hedgehogs in your garden. They love to live under hedges, in log piles, or in specially made hedgehog houses. Leave some leaves and twigs for them to build their nests. Minimise or avoid the use of pesticides.

Be careful when mowing your lawn: Hedgehogs can be easily injured by lawnmowers. If you see a hedgehog in your garden, stop mowing and allow it to move away safely.
Be careful when driving: Hedgehogs can be easily squished by cars. Slow down, especially in rural areas, and be on the lookout for hedgehogs crossing the road.
Hibernation: During winter, hedgehogs hibernate. If you see a hedgehog out during the day, it might be sick or need help finding food.
Report sightings: Do not touch or handle the hedgehog but please report sightings to your local wildlife rescue centre.
Remember, hedgehogs are protected animals. It is illegal to harm or disturb them. By following the simple steps above, you can help to protect hedgehogs and ensure their survival in our community.
